Leadership values are a subcategory of those values that positively affect one’s ability (or potential) to lead effectively or be “an exceptional leader.”

Leadership values can be fostered and developed with time. However, as with most personality traits, you will probably lean more toward one particular leadership style than another.

What are the core values of a great leader?

  • Honesty: Honesty is one of the most important values for becoming a trustworthy leader. Honesty refers to having the ability to discuss topics clearly and truthfully. Honesty is closely related to transparency.
  • Passion: Passion is the feeling that fulfills you and motivates you to keep working toward achieving your goals, even when you encounter obstacles or unexpected setbacks.
  • Integrity: Integrity is to be genuine and honest and to do what is right at all times. Integrity is an important trait for leaders because their teams need to know they can rely on them and respect what they say and what they do.
  • Dedication: Dedication is a promise to yourself to commit to a certain task, principle, or goal. A strong leader has a high level of dedication towards his/her company, team and the job he/she does.
  • Empathy: Empathy means being able to understand the feelings and emotional states of others and to respond appropriately to their actions and behaviours. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a core component of social intelligence, which also includes understanding and controlling your own emotions.
  • Personal development: Personal development refers to continuing to learn, educate yourself, and grow personally. Great leaders are dedicated for continued personal development because they realize that there is always something new that they can learn or something that they can improve upon.
  • Service: A service is an action performed for another person. Great leadership is an expression of service. It encourages and motivates others by showing them that they’re valued and needed.
  • Respect: Respect is a form of admiration for someone’s qualities, abilities or achievements; respecting others’ rights, wishes and feelings; and treating people fairly. A good leader earns the respect of others by doing things well, rather than simply relying on their position or title.
  • Resilience: Resilience is your ability to face adversity and bounce back from setbacks, challenges, and obstacles. Leaders need to be resilient because they often face numerous challenges and obstacles when trying to achieve their goals.
  • Adaptability: Being adaptable means being ready to accept and respond to changes when they occur. Adaptability is crucial when working in the workplace because it’s a constantly changing environment.
  • Authenticity: Authenticity refers to saying and doing things that are genuine and honest. Leaders can show their authentic selves by continuing to develop and living by their core values every day.
